Amman- Dr. Sanaa Shiqwarah was elected today as the Chairwoman of Middle East Travel and Tourism Development Network at Middle East University. Also, MEU was chosen as the headquarters of the Network.
This decision was made during the first meeting of the Network, which was attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Dana Firas, the Former Secretary-General of World Tourism Organization Dr. Talib Al-Rifai, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Yacoub Nasereddin, the President of Middle East University Dr. Mohammad Al Hileh and a number of Arab and foreign experts and specialists in tourism sector and its development in the countries of the Middle East.
During the event, Princess Dana Firas expressed her pride in launching a specialized network in tourism sector by experts and specialists, with the aim of improving tourism and enriching the cultural heritage. Her Highness praised selecting a Jordanian national University like Middle East University as the headquarters of the Network and to be a source of harmony, heritage and convergence of civilizations.
In his turn, the Former Secretary-General of World Tourism Organization and the Chairman of the Supreme Advisory Council of the Network Dr. Talib Al-Rifai talked about the methods of supporting the promotion of tourism in the Middle East region. Dr. Al-Rifai confirmed that choosing Middle East University as the permanent headquarters of the Network is based on its being as a serious and committed University that seeks learning. He added that Middle East University adopts the approach of improving the educational process through providing an appropriate cultural environment and distinguished academic outputs. In this context, the Chairman of the Supreme Advisory Council stated that MEU is a pioneer academic institution that is qualified to promote tourism sector and to meet the needs of the sustainable development process.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Yacoub Nasereddin declared that Middle East University in Jordan established a center to manage Middle East Travel and Tourism Development Network in the year 2018 in line with its community objectives and responsibilities. Dr. Nasereddin added that the specialized center was established based on the role of tourism and travel in leading the economy globally and the ability of this sector in making a positive change in the lives of individuals and societies.
On the other hand, the elected Chairwoman of the Network Dr. Sanaa Shiqwarah (the Vice-President of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Community Service at Middle East University) proclaimed that establishing the Network is derived from believing in the essential role of tourism and travel in leading economy at the international level. Dr. Shiqwarah confirmed that choosing “Tourism Brings Us Together” to be the motto of the Network stresses the fact that tourism and travel are universal rights, and that cooperation among all stakeholders in tourism and travel sector contributes to achieving competitiveness and sustainable development in the Middle East region and surrounding countries, and in the world.
During the meeting, the participants discussed the agenda of the network and strategic direction in the coming years according to the action plan to promote tourism sector in the region. In addition to that, Suzy Hatough was elected as Secretary General of the Network.
It is worth mentioning, that Middle East University established Middle East Travel and Tourism Development Network in the year 2018 in order to develop tourism through joint cooperation that aims at raising the benefits and opportunities resulting from tourism sector to contribute to improving economic and social development in the countries of the Middle East region.
The Board is comprised of experts and specialists from Mediterranean countries, including: Former Minister of Tourism in Egypt Dr. Hisham Zazou, President of World Federation of Travel Journalists and Writers (FIJET) Tijani Haddad (Tunisia), Chief Executive of GENERIS TORESIM Mr. Georgios Drakabuls (Athens), Dean of the Higher Institute of Tourism and Hotels in Ismailia in the Arab Republic of Egypt Dr. Qadriah Al-Bandari, Vice-President of the International Air Transport Association in Africa and the Middle East Mr. Mohamed Al-Bakri, Secretary General of the Mediterranean Tourism Organization Andrew Muscat (Malta), Director General of Tourism Promotion Authority Dr. Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat, Director General of the Scientific Institute (PHI) Mr. Ahmed Jadallah, in addition to Operations Manager at InterContinental Hotels Group in Amman Mr.Osama Massoud
The Middle East University was founded in 2005 as a Graduate Studies University with twelve specializations. Towards the beginning of the academic year 2008-2009 the university opened twenty specializations for both Graduate and Undergraduate students with the ongoing growth in staff and students.
