During a lecture presented by nutritionist Ms. Amal Janada, students at the Faculty of Physiotherapy explored the evolution of nutritional needs throughout the life span, with special concerns for older adults, as different physiological changes occur with age, emphasising the importance of nutritional interventions designed especially for the elderly.
In the lecture, fasting caught attention for its potential health benefits, including the regulation of metabolism and cell repair mechanisms, while older adults should remain cautious, taking into consideration several factors, including medication schedules, hydration, and nutritional adequacy during feeding periods.
Ms. Janada further clarified the importance of fasting nutrition strategies, which start with balanced intake of macronutrients and prioritising nutrient-rich food to meet basic micronutrient needs during feeding periods, and hydration, which is shown by maintaining adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration, especially during periods of fasting.
