The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Middle East University organized a lecture through Zoom about the qualifications of the translator, where it hosted Dr. Suleiman Awad Al-Abbas, President of The Jordanian Translators and Applied Linguists Association.
This lecture, attended by the faculty dean Dr. Ahmad Musa, and several faculty members and students, was aimed at giving students the opportunity to learn about various aspects of the translation career and the scientific principles thereof.
Moreover, Dr. Al-Abbas discussed the most important qualifications any translator must have, in addition to other skills that would be a rich addition to their experience. He pointed out that a translator is not only a person who knows more than one language, but also a person who is honest in transferring the meaning from the source to the target. This must be a well-informed person, not only about the materials they translate, but beyond that.
He concluded by saying that teaching foreign languages at universities is essential to teaching translation, and must therefore be given due care in order to build the right foundation in students who might become translators in the future. The lecture included questions and answers, in addition to an open discussion between the lecturer and the audience.
