A group of students from the Faculty of Architecture at Middle East University took part in a design workshop in Cairo titled “Revitalising the Urban Environment: Creative and Sustainable Interventions in Heritage Spaces”, held at the building of Tkiyet Abu al-Dahab – Naguib Mahfouz Museum from February 23 to 27, 2025.
The workshop was a collaborative effort that brought together the students of architecture from three different universities, giving it a dynamic spirit of cultural and knowledge exchange between Jordan and Egypt.
The experience was considered a unique opportunity for students to engage with the urban environment of historic Cairo, offering them the opportunity to explore the relationship between people and place and to understand the challenges of rehabilitating heritage spaces in creative and sustainable ways.
By immersing the students in the details of Cairo’s urban landscape, the workshop was a multidimensional architectural journey that allowed them to feel the spirit of the place, as this direct interaction developed their understanding of the concept of ‘human architecture’.
Led by Dr. Yasser Al-Sayed, Head of the Department of Architecture at Zamalek College of Fine Arts, with the assistance of Dr. Shaden Abu Safiya, Head of the Department of Architecture at Middle East University, and Dr. Maysa Shomali, Head of the Department of Architecture at Al-Balqa Applied University, who played a prominent role in organising and guiding the students through the experience, the workshop was conducted under distinguished academic supervision.
